The Sky Is The Limit

Skydiving’s Triumph of Body and Mind

by Anastasia Beattie

Ask anyone who’s ever gone for a skydive and they’ll tell you - it’s a transformative experience that extends well beyond the thrill of free fall. More than the adrenaline rush and breathtaking vistas, the world of skydiving unfurls a colourful tapestry of surprising health benefits that quickly become an integral part of a joyous existence!

The entire body including the brain is used and trained before, during, and after a skydive!

High Altitude - Higher Mindset

The Experience

Prior to arriving at the Drop Zone, something incredible has already started to happen. You begin to wonder, what will it be like? Your mind races, creating pictures of gorgeous clouds, dizzying heights, awe-inspiring speed, and (just like an astronaut) how you might feel conquering the ultimate final frontier - the unknown!

Despite your mind’s best efforts to conjure an idea of how this new experience will be, your wildest imagination pales in comparison to this extremely personal once-in-a-lifetime journey and all the unique benefits you’ll find on the other side. Enjoy this space! What is it telling you about yourself? The most wonderful thing about the unknown is that it is just that, unknown and stupendously mysterious.

Arriving at the drop-zone, you’ll find one of two things; your mind has made you very aware of your fear, or you’ve slipped into a surreal space where you feel as if you were walking through a dream. In either case, look around! You’ll find the staff and experienced skydivers (who come from all walks of life) very jovial and easy-going. It’d be hard to pick one out who isn’t smiling or laughing! Is it really possible that skydiving is the reason for all this joy? Remind yourself that every single one of these people have been exactly where you are now.

It’s time for your skydive! You board the plane, and fly through beautiful skies with a surprisingly clear mind. How did this happen? Why are you not freaking out? Ok, maybe you are freaking out, but it’s no where near the kind of freak out you may have anticipated. The views are gorgeous and everyone in the plane is upbeat and happy to be there - smiling, laughing and even singing.

Someone shouts “DOOR!”

The door opens! The wind is loud but your mind becomes quiet. It’s time! You get into position in the door, realizing there is over 10,000 feet of sky between yourself and the ground - and then you’re flying. You thought it would feel like falling, but it feels like flying through a dream weightlessly far above the world. Your canopy opens and the noise of free fall stops while you float down through the sky in serene bliss. Once you’ve landed, you take it all in.

You’ve just jumped out of an airplane!

This is only the beginning.

Whether or not you choose to do it again (or embark on a Solo Licensing Journey) there’s no going back on what you’ve learned. You are now aware of your power - you’ve conquered the unknown. By challenging your fears as well as yourself to achieve something so dream-like, a new sense of mindfulness overcomes you. Overwhelming gratitude and confidence bursts forth, you feel like you’re on-top of the world!

Why does this happen after a skydive?

Think of it this way; we are putting ourselves in such an unnatural situation by leaping out of an airplane. As soon as you’re out that door - nothing in your life outside of this experience could possibly matter. You become a raw human, mind and body united as one. This connection lasts long after your first skydive!

The newfound mindfulness that emerges in your life thanks to skydiving gives you a whole new realm of self-care opportunities. You’ll find that you know yourself better, you know more clearly what you need/want from life and you are now better equipped to make it all happen.

Skydiving can even make you live longer! Science has proven that those with a fulfilling relationships live longer, healthier lives. With the mood-boosting power of skydiving, your existing relationships will improve, you’ll find it easier to make close friends (especially at the drop zone!) and you’ll have a whole new awareness of the world around you.

Turns out all those healthy, happy people you noticed at the drop zone are healthy and happy for a reason!

The Science

As with most sports, skydiving tones and shapes the body. From using muscles you may never have been aware of during free fall maneuvers all the way to learning to pack a parachute, the body is constantly in new states of motion and awareness while at the drop zone. The average weight of skydive gear is about 25 lbs! Reaction time, flexibility, strength, cardio, and all motor skills are comprehensively trained through skydiving.

What you may not expect are the beneficial and intense chemical changes that occur within the body!

During a skydive, the body becomes flooded with feel-good chemicals such as Adrenaline, Serotonin and Dopamine. While promoting a heightened sense of being and wellness, these chemicals are a catalyst for physical benefits.

Adrenaline induces super-states of mental awareness and extreme strength while increasing blood oxygen. Aside from allowing easier access to mental and physical super-states, this increase of blood oxygen also has the surprising benefit of boosting the immune system, making the body more resilient to infections!

Dopamine, a powerful neurotransmitter, plays a huge role in everyday life as well as skydiving. It is also known as the “motivation molecule”, providing the mind with the internal drive to achieve goals.

Individuals with increased dopamine levels are more prone to adventure, and achieve flow-state more frequently! Dopamine does so much more than provide the mind with incentive and reward, it also regulates sleep, digestion, memory storage, learning, focus, social attitudes - and even reduces inflammation!

Serotonin, another powerful neurotransmitter, is well known for it’s links to high mood, memory, and mindset. It also contributes towards elevated cardiovascular function, bone & organ function, appetite regulation and muscular control. Serotonin can even accelerate cell migration, leading to a faster healing process!

Pharmaceutical researchers have long been searching for drugs to increase levels of these astounding chemicals in order to treat serious mental illness including depression and anxiety. Skydiving provides a revolutionary natural and drug-free way to boost an individual’s feel-good hormones and dramatically improve life quality!
